If i can get a new 2.5 ton goodman 13 seer package heat pump w/r22 for 1600.00 shipped to my home, would i be better off to do this or spend another 7 or 800.00 for a 3 ton with r/410. thanks

I would with out question get a unit that uses R-410a, as far as sizing the unit for your home, the only proper way would be to do a load calc "manual J" for your home.

Given R-22s uncertain future I'd pay the extra as good insurance. You are dealing with two different tonnages, so you really need to know via load calc if 3 tons is overkill.

thanks for reply...The unit i will be replacing is a ruud 3 ton gas pack i think (model urgg-10e37jkr) Its 16 yrs old but always got the house cool quickly but always felt like it was still humid inside. So i'm wondering can i get a r-410 package heat pump in a 2.5 ton...

Your instincts on humidity control say to get a copy of HVAC-Calc (http://hvaccomputer.com/), perform your Manual J to end the guess-work. Don't forget to check the heating BTUs of the old and new unit, and maybe consider a two speed compressor to better match both your heating and cooling needs.

one more question...if i change from gas pack to heat pump will all the wires necessary be at the old theromostat. There are 8 wires coming out the wall and four of those are hooked up to the old gas packplus a black wire pigtailed and also hooked up..what is the best heatpump thermostat?

You should be fine with 8 wires, I like the Honeywell Vision Pro stat...just my preference.

P.S. - I don't know if a H/P would be your best choice given your location. You would have to chk out yor gas vs. elec rates
