Judging by the screw pattern these guys are amatuers. Yes the sheet broke and they put it up anyway. If you are paying them then have them replace it. If they wont do it then make sure your finisher pre fills the break with quick set before tape to minimize future cracking.

Yeah, it turns out there's a "bulge" above the window, and they ended up breaking the sheet. They replaced it, and shimmed as best as they could. These are 100+ year old studs, and plasterers of the day did a wonderful job evening out funky carpentry work! Thanks for the reply!
