You need to replace the whole unit. Salt water is not kind to the internals of the gas control valve or the burner, firebox......

who do I call, a plumber? Our adjuster completely missed it, so I will have to get quotes on repairing.

Look in the phone book for gas fireplace sales and service. This site may help you.

The best thing would likely be a fine piece of wire. Also make sure the burner tube is completely dry before attempting to use. Should the gas control valve was submersed in water I has to be replaced.
