Can anyone tell me if all heat pump and AC manufacturers are being required to phase out R22 by a certain date and how long R-22 is supposed to be available?
Also, I'm planning to replace my existing heating and cooling system with a new one that may use R-410A. Can the existing line set that carried R-22 be used or do I have to have a new one installed.

Yes, all manf will not be able to make equipment that use R-22 starting in 2010. I don't remember exact date R-22 will no longer be avialable, I want to say 2015 but not sure. You can reuse the line set if you have to but need to flush it with R-11 flush. I've been installing R410a equipment for the last 3-4 yrs.

The general understanding is that by 2010 manufactures have to phase out R-22 equipment, and by 2020 cannot sell R-22. However, I have read that the exact wording of the law is manufacturers simply cannot ship their product pre-charged with R-22. Given this potential legal obscurity, the sheer volume of customers with R-22 systems the will need parts for many years, and that there is now an R-22 drop in replacement called R-417, it is unclear what the future holds for R-22 systems.

So if you can find a killer deal on an R-22 system it might be worth the risk, otherwise I would go with R-410A. Yes, the existing line set can be reused if no fittings were originally soft brazed (R-22 pressures are so much lower you could get away with it) and the lines are flushed properly. Ask for a line item on replacing the line set and you may find it is cheap insurance to just replace.
