I've posted info on our setup a few times, but will refresh it..... We have a private well that is 403 ft. deep. Was tested by our local Rainsoft dealer. Hardness was low enough that no softener was needed, but since we brought it from our previous home we used it anyway. Iron is the issue and it fluctuates with large water usage and rainfall in large amounts. It can go from 95% clear with a yellowish tinge to looking like diluted orange Gatorade. Suggeted setup for our fluctuating iron was a chemical feed system consisting of 2 15 gallon tanks with adjustable rate pumps. One tank uses alum for iron removal and the other tank has bleach for disinfecting and oxidation and also has caustic soda to boost the PH which was originally tested at 5.8. Then the water goes to a 120 gallon retention tank, then to a Hysulex filter, then to the softener and passes through a large wholehouse filter and inside the home. At the time of installation it was recommended that we use 64 oz. of bleach in the 15 gallon tank and based on our water usage we fill the tanks every 8 days or so. That seemed to be OK, but every now and then I noticed a hint of chlorine in the water, tested it with pool test strips which did indiate some chlorine in the water (3-4 ppm I think) and decided to back down on the dosage of bleach to 32 oz. per fillup. I have noticed that I have to use more alum to pull the iron out. Will going back to a stronger concentration of bleach help oxidize more iron making it easier to extract?
Also, our Hysulex generates every other night. Based on the chemicals we use anybody know how often the thing should be re-bedded? I asked the dealer about 2 years ago (system is almost 4 years old) and he said it was nowhere near time for it to be done. I was going to have them do it the first time, then I'd know exactly how to do it and could save $$$ by doing it myself.
One more thing..... if I increase the amount of bleach would having the Hysulex generate more often help any at all in removing any residual iron from passing through? Thanks!
