I want to get rid of the carpet on my stairs. Anyone ever replaced the carpet with wood?
Do you have to remove the old stair wood first and replace it with a hardwood? Does anyone have some tips on how to get rid of the carpet and turn out with something nice.

Putting any wood on top of the stairs will make the stairs non-compliant. That is, the top and bottom step would be different than the rest making them a tripping hazard. To stay within code you would need to replace the treads.

By removing the carpet and padding, you will effectively remove 1/2 to 9/16 of an inch in height on all but the top landing and the bottom landing. You didn't say what the rise of the stairs is now but standard is 7 in. rise/11 in. run. As long as you stay close to the 1/2-9/16 thickness, I don't think you will have a problem. A lot of stairs have either odd size risers or a short one on the bottom. A big difference WILL create a tripping hazard but what you suggest should be no problem. The problem is finding wood 1/2 inch thick that will cover the steps.
