I have a gas water heater and have been working on insulating the hot water pipes in the basement. I've read that the first 3 feet of pipe going into and coming out of the heater are the most important to insulate. However, I've also read that I shouldn't insulate anything within 6 inches of the flue, due to it becoming a fire hazard. The pipes are easily within 6 inches, is there anything I can do to insulate them?
