Rugs, Carpets and Carpeting - Installing Carpet on a Basement Concrete Floor

Hello all!

I'm currently working on finishing my basement into a "Man Cave" and looking to lay down carpet for the room.

The basement floor is somewhat uneven, and a bit rough.

What we you suggest I do? I was thinking of installing it straight on top, of course "moisture proofing" it and then adding padding then the carpet.

What do you guys think? Also what kind of carpet would you guys recommend, I was looking at berber, but after reading some posts on here not so sure anymore.

I think you really need to look at floating the floor to get it even before laying the carpet. If you don't you'll be kicking yourself later when the carpet wears unevenly and the furniture doesn't sit flat.

What do you exactly mean by "floating the floor"?

As of yesterday I was looking at self leveling concrete to lay on top of the uneven areas.

Same thing. Floating the floor is filling in the low spots with concrete and smoothing them out with a float, which is like a trowel. If you can use self-leveling concrete, it sounds like a lot of the work will be done for you. And how can THAT be wrong?!

berber wears really well...but is harder to clean..berber is just the style of carpet and not the kind

depending on your budget and what you expect from the room and how long you are planning on keeping it

olefin is cheap but will wear out fast...but harder to stain
nylon is more money but will wear slower..but you can stain it
natural fibers...i hardly see anymore..such as wool and wouldnt be right for the "man cave"
