I have a contractor grade Bryant heat pump. (Seer 10.5) When I measure the temperature rise in the heat Exchanger compartment using a Digital temperature probe it is approx 12 degrees (71 inlet - 83 outlet) with an outside ambient of 35 deg F. I want to call in a Service Tech to take some readings thinking that I may be low on Freon. ( R22). However I have heard that measuring the pressures in the winter is difficult to use in diagnosis. Can anyone give me a short list of the things that the Service tech should do to diagnose the problem without reverting to the old replace and see if that works method. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

A qualified service tech will be able to let you know if the charge is correct regardless of ambiant temp. By the way, you don't have a heat exchanger.
