Our apt has doors made of a wood called red gum (1920's). It has a beautiful reddish brown color. The doors had been painted, but I had them stripped and used Danish oil that was a 50:50 mixture of red mahogany and dark walnut. We have a pocket door that is painted and not original. I want to match the other doors. What would be the best species of wood to match the grain and color of the red gum? My options are cherry, walnut, poplar, and clear alder. Thanks

I found a photo of Red Gum and it looks to me like walnut or wild cherry would be the best match. Poplar would work, but you would have to pick and choose the boards.
Get some samples and try different staining combinations to make a better choice.

The 36 Plymouth woody I am restoring had a red gum band around the waste. Very hard stuff to find. I used cherry with a mix of cherry and mahogony stains to get the right color(some ot the gum survived). Walnut is too dark, and quite expensive, cherry is not cheap. I would experiment with some poplar, cheap and readily available.

I got 3 wood samples (cherry, walnut, and clear alder). The alder was the best match color and grainwise. Will it darken further like cherry? Also is alder plywood available for the panel? Thanks
