Hi,

I just bought a great dining set - solid pecan with original natural clear finish. My only problem is that prior owner put a colored varnish on top of hutch. I've removed it and am ready to put on a clear finish. Problem is I don't know what type of finish is on the lower piece and table and chairs. It has nice satin sheen but I don't know if its lacquer, shellac or what. What type of finish was most common for this mid-century era furniture. Would it be obvious difference if I use a satin poly even though i'm sure the finish on bottom of hutch isn't poly? Any advice is most appreciated! Thanks

If by 'mid century' you men the 1950's, it's almost certain the finish is lacquer.

Lacquer is a difficult finish to apply by brush because it dries so quickly (which is why it's favored by furniture mfgs.)

I would suggest doing a test coat on some scrap lumber with the poly to be sure you match the sheen...that's going to be the biggest challenge.
