My heat pump compressor does not run when thermostat calls for heat. I opened the access panel on condensing unit and manually closed the contactor. Compressor and fan runs as long as I hold contactor in. When I release, unit will stop running. Electric backup heat is only thing that runs with air handler blower. Could this be the defrost timer electronic board? Is the ambient temperature sensor normally open or closed? Is the coil sensor contact normally open or closed?
Please help!

Are you getting any trouble codes (blinking lights) on the board? Also, did you check the coil on the contactor?

No blinking lights. Unit is 15 years old. I do not get voltage to main contactor coil when thermostat is calling for compressor to start. Coil reads OK with ohmeter.

Chk for broken low voltage connections at the cond unit - take apart wire nuts, make sure wires didn't break. chk all low volt connections. If all looks good jump R and Y at stat:coffee:

No broken wires. Jumping R to Y has no effect.
