we recently bought a house has an OLD (1978 according to the panel) napco alarm system from probably two owners ago. there are no contacts left anywhere on the doors or windows but the little key switch boxes are still around and the smoke alarms are still wired in and the main control box still has power to it. Do these things get power off the main breaker panel and I can throw breakers unitl the little blinky lights go out then disconnect everything? and is there anything else i may need to know about these units that i'll trip over when I try to rip it all out?
any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Wow, I'm amazed that it's even that functional. Somewhere in the house, there is transformer powering the system. It may be a wall plug type, or it may be a "frame" transformer like the one for a doorbell. If you can find the thing, it's best to unplug it or disconnect it from primary power after you throw the breaker.
Check your smokes carefully. The odds are that those are standard 110v hardwired smokes and are not connected to the alarm system.
Otherwise, your instinct is good. Unplug the backup battery and flip breakers til it goes dead. That will at least narrow down which part of the house the transformer is in so you can find it.

thanks for the input. there are 2 sets of smoke alarms in the house, the 9v batt operated ones and ones that are wired. the wired ones are dead and the fuze for the fire section of the napco control box is blown so i think i'm ok yankin' those.
any hints on how to track down that transformer?

Just what I suggested above. If you can narrow it down to one circuit that's the best you can do. After that, it's an old-fashioned "snipe hunt".
There's no standard for this kind of thing, if that's what you are wondering.
