I have a Trane EX1000 and having problems with the defrost. It was not heating right either and the Tech said that may be contributing to my problem. In checking found drier stopped up and TXV died during the process. The defrost got buried in all this. HP is heating good now but the defrost was still not working right. It was reccommended to replace the coil sensor as it is the most likely suspect. I was able to force a defrost and so I replaced the sensor about $20. I have heard it go into defrost but it clears up so quick I cannot get outside to observe. Of course there is not much of any frost so I guess it would end fairly quick. This morning very cold I was watching the green lite on the DF board. It blinks at 1 sec rate and then I noticed it was do a double quick blink and started counting the 1 sec blinks. I noticed a pattern of sorts that every 10 blinks it was double or triple blink and back to 1 sec. Now and then it would go more 1 sec blinks and repeat this pattern. Is this normal?

I called the Trane customer line today and what a line I got. I don't think they understand, just the engineers. He said I must have a lot of time on my hands to count the green lite blinking. I said thank you and hung up. He also said if there is a lot of buildup just go into backup heat and wait until it's warmer. Nothing don't run like a Trane.

No bites on the blinking lite? Anyway the temp got down to 5 degrees last night and the HP ran all night maintaining 72-73 but no noticeable defrost cycles. In fact the Aux heaters did not come on. Temp above air handler was 88 degrees at 5 outside. As to the defrost cycle got some info today and trying to digest it all. There is something about delta T rising tht determines if a defrost is needed. What happened to the mechanical timer? I think Trane has a problem with the defrost board and does not want t mention it.

A steady blinking light means its operating normally, i wouldn't worry about that little stutter step

Found out the green lite is also a data port. With the right adapter and software one can pick the brains of this board. I suspect it is a photocell connected to a USB port. Speed is not important since there is a small amount of data available. I suspect the blips now and then is part of this. I have found more detail troubleshooting online that gives the voltages at the ambient and coil connectors. This will verify that the connectors are good. You can unplug and check the resistance to temp but knowing that the connectors are connecting on the board is a better test. The chart in my packets only give the resistance but another chart online gives both.
