I just got a new Goodman heat pump installed. Here's the problem- it continues to run the fan during the defrost cycle, so that it feels like it is blowing A/C. So we have hot air, and then cold. Everyone hates it- no one wants cold air blowing on them in the winter. Is this how it is supposed to run? If not how can I fix it? It's about like having the water turn cold while you're in the shower. Of course the guy who installed it is evading my calls. Thanks, all. :wall:

The indoor blower will and should run during defrost. Having said that, I would call back the installing contractor to make sure they have the aux heat set up right.
Is this a single stage heat pump?
A two stage heat pump?
Is yor aux heat elec or fossil fuel?
What kind of stat did they install?
What type of equip M# etc ?:coffee:

Defrost is an event that is essentially like switching the system to A/C mode without the outdoor fan on. So, yes, the discharge air temp will be cold.
To temper that cold air your aux/em heat should be coming on during that stage to keep you from getting a chill and possibly shorten the defrost interval.
Since this is a new install, it sounds like the system wasn't completely wired up.
If you are handy we may be able to verify the wiring and find what's missing, but it will require specifics on your HP, air handler, thermostat and wire mappings. Otherwise you'll need a pro.

I am handy, in fact I am licensed electrician but without specific training in HVAC. The aux heat was not installed with the rest of the unit, I had to do that myself later and when I realized it wasn't working I called the guy back and he said try changing the thermostat from E/W1 to W2. After I did that the aux heat did come on during the heating cycle but still not during the defrost cycle. Aux heat is electric. I'm told I have single stage, and it's a 10 kw. Is there a seperate wire from the thermostat to the sequencers that would close the contactors during this part of the cycle? Would it be possible if I gave my # for one of you to just call me and we can discuss this better? Then I could open the unit back up and check things with my multi-meter while someone tells me what to check. Thanks. If so it's xxx-xxx-xxxx. I'll call right back so you don't have charges.

Post a wire map from your thermostat, air handler and heat pump. Defrost is initiated from the HP back to your air handler, so I am particularly interested in those wires.

There is a W1 wire from the heat pump that must be connected to W1 on the aux. heat. The heat pump energizes that wire calling for Aux heat when it enters defrost.

Hmm, Then there is my problem. I have no wire on E/W1 at all. The schematic that came with the thermostat shows 9 wires, while I only have 7, so something is definately missing. I should have something both on W1 and W2 but I do not. When the Tstat says stage 1 is when the air blows cold, and hot when it says stage 1 & 2. However, the guy that installed my system said it's a single stage and that's what he set the Tstat for. Before I moved the one wire from W1 to W2 the aux heat was not heating up ever because I took them out and saw they were still shiny. I then jumpered the terminals in the Tstat and the strips heated up. So maybe my unit is actually multistage and I am missing a wire? Maybe I could jumper W1 & W2 in my Tstat and change the setting to multistage? Ha ha. Anyway, I would have to try to draw and scan a schematic of what I have because I don't think it matches what came with the equipment.

what are the exact models of your Heat pump, air handling unit, and t-stat? And like dac asked for, you should check the wiring at the air handler, heat pump, and t-stat. Provide what color wires are connected to which terminals at each location. That will help the experts on here sort out your troubles.
The W1 from the heat pump to the Aux heat may not be at the thermostat. That wire may be directly wired from the heat pump to the terminal on the air handler.
