Has anyone purchased a HP or other unit from one of these wholesale internet sites(budgetheating.com, acdirect.com, etc)? If so, how was your experience?

Who you going to get to install it? No warranty!

If I got a package unit(no refrigerant issues), why would I need an installer? Does the warranty not stand for DIY?

Most times, no, it doesn't cover DIY. The warranty will normally be through the manufacturer who probably states something like "Installation to be performed by qualified service technicians" and "Warranty void if unit not purchased through authorised dealer or distributor".
This probably wouldn't apply to things like through the wall units you see in motels and such.

Even if you get a package unit, you're still going to want a service tech to come and verify the system. Do NOT assume that it is properly charged and configured from the factory.
Beyond that, hooking up power and ductwork isn't rocket science, and you can do a lot of repairs if needed for what you will save.

I agree. I don't want to do anything illegal(refrigerant), but apparently I can save $1700-$2000. A lot of DIY can be done for that kind of $$$. I have several rental units with split systems. The savings compound if, when needed, a package system can be installed myself. I would like to keep my tenants with a efficient source of heating/cooling( rather than baseboard heat/window air, etc.) but do so cost effectively.

Parts for package system are more expensive to replace. So savings up front will have to be used in the long run.
