I bought a house 6 months ago. Under the kitchen sink, there is a CUNO FM-1500DWS CTO/Cyst/Lead filter installed, which feeds the drinking water faucet as well as the icemaker.

My regular water seems to have a lot of white "scale", evidenced by a table-top humidifier which I bought and had to descale within 2 weeks, since the reset kept tripping on it. (Is scale the same thing as water hardness?) I've started filling this tank from the drinking water faucet, but have not done so long enough to know if it is making any difference.

I notice that CUNO also make a CM-1-SR, which claims to reduce scale. Is it effective? Is it a drop-in replacement for the FM-1500DWS? Could I/Should I replace the FM-1500DWS with the CM-1 SR? Or should I gang one after the other?

Thanks in advance,
JimR

Most likely it is calcium carbonate, or hardness. It s=could be sodium or other sediment.

Typical filters will not prevent this. You would need a softened, or distilled or RO water for humidifiers. Softened water will leave a residue but it should be easy to remove.
