I recently purchased a Senco 602 nailer. When I checked out the nail selection, I found it rather confusing. There was 3 1/4" smooth shank or 3" ring shank. Why not make 3” plus ring shank? What is the advantage of using one over the other? Why not a 3 1/2" ring shank? Thanks for any input.

Welcome to the forums! Good gun. Smooth shank nails are used for framing, hence the longer shank. Ring shank nails are used mostly for decking, etc. For most framing, a 3" nail will suffice, anyway. Ring shank nails cost more, but hold alot better, so it depends on you use.
I dedicate my 602 for decking and hot dipped galvanized nails, since they are considerably cheaper than Bostitch
My Bostitch guns are used for framing.
