I have cable tv with several hundred channels.
Now I want to buy a hdtv (1080p) lcd and was wondering if I need extra hd cable and hook up to show hdtv on my new hdtv?

You can throw the cable box away if you own it, return it to the cable company if you rent it.
Unless the cable box has some HDMI hook-up???

If you have standard cable you will receive only standard-definition signals on your new TV. To get HD you'll have to call the cable company to upgrade, or explore other options like satellite or FIOS. A roof antenna will receive HD signals too, but only for the local channels.
