I have a Trane Heat pump with a 20x10 return duct coming out of it when it goes up through the floor it changes into a drywall duct with an internal dimension of 25.25 x 18.5. Due to some renovations i need to reduce the size of this drywalled return. Can I reduce it to the size of the metal duct in the floor below? If not can i change the shape of the drywalled return to 48x10? If I reduce the size would i need to put additional returns in other rooms? Below is a sketch of the return.

thanks

Yes, this is the only return.

I am not sure what size unit I have. It is a Trane Model # TWV730A140A0 , 1/3 Hp, 2.1 amp, 200 Volts....manufactured in 1989.

We've never noticed any problems with it...we just need some of that drywalled duct area for a remodeling project we are doing.

thanks
