I just had a new Goodman heat pump installed in my home, and I am experiencing a problem. I understand that the freon reverses in order to defrost the outside as part of the cycle, but I would rather the fan not run during this part of the process. It blows hot air from the vents for a few minutes, and then it turns ice cold for another couple of minutes before it shuts off. Is this normal? I know that the condenser inside the house is cold during this part of the cycle, but it feels as though the air from the vents switches back and forth between heat and A/C which in turn lowers the temperature in my house back down which then triggers the heat to come back on. I know this is causing my unit to run more than it should and is raising my electric bill. BTW, I am a licensed electrician so I can fix the wiring myself, I just don't know if there is a way to adjust this problem. I would appreciate any advice. Thanks!! Kristin (Oh, and the guy who installed it won't return my calls.)

Do you have any auxillary heat? Like electric heat strips inside the air handler or a gas furnace as a back-up? Whenever the heat pump goes into a defrost the auxillary heat should come on to prevent cool air form blowing into the house and continue the heating demand. Sounds like your aux. heat isn't working, isn't wired-up, or isn't there.
When the defrost occurs the system is running in a/c mode to thaw the outdoor coil and that is why the indoor air is cool and needs the aux. heat to come on. The indoor fan has to run during this cycle. Need to know what type of t-stat you have and whether or not you have an outdoor thermostat and what type of aux. heat.

Maybe your thermostsat is not set yp right. When it is in defrost cycle, 3 things takes place, reversing valve switches, condensor fan stops, and aux. heat strips come on to keep you from getting cold air.

Ok, so one of you says the fan has to run during this part of the cycle, and the other says it shuts off? I got a gently used outside unit from a friend and hired someone to install it with the corresponding inside unit, which he ordered. He didn't order heat strips to go with it, thinking that my old ones would fit, but they didn't. Since I am an electrician myself I convinced him to just call in the order for me and let me pick them up. After I installed the heat strips I noticed the air was still cold while the display on the thermostat said they were on, and after tracing things out discovered that the thermostat was hooked up wrong, with the wire that closed the sequencers on the wrong screw. It was on E/W1 and he told me to try putting it on W2. That made the heat strip come on, but I am still having this other problem where it blows hot and then cold. The thermostat is digital, and I don't know if I have one outdoors but I haven't seen one. Anyway, when it is in defrost mode the fan keeps blowing but no other heat is on so it feels like A/C. I don't remember the guy spending any extra time programming the thermostat so maybe it is in the wrong mode?
I really appreciate the help. I thought this would make my electric bill go down but instead I am now averaging 65 kwh/day instead of the 45 or so I was using last year.

Ok, I got ahold of the guy who installed the system, and he said it sounds like my aux heat does not come on during the defrost cycle like it should. I know the strips work because the air is hot at first before it goes cold. How can I fix this without paying him to come back? (He said he would come out and fix it when he gets a chance- that could be never.)
