According to the Haynes manual I need a special tool to disconnect the fuel line from the filter, but when I went to the auto parts store to pick up the filter and the tool the guy said I wouldn't need the special tool. I am wondering who is right so when I go to do this I know exactly what I have to do.

Ahh, Well you know those parts guys ! You need to get a set of quik- disconnect tools. I prefer the plastic ones that I also use in A/C work, However the aluminum type work quite well if you maintain a slight bevel on the tip for easier insertation.

I don't recall Fords needing a special tool.
It should just be a plastic clip, You can remove it with a small screwdriver.

Buy the tool!( The plastic ones work best and are not very expensive) It makes the job so much easier. The hardest part of changing the fuel filter on the F150 is taking the old filter out of the holding bracket, and installing the new filter in the bracket.
By the way the filter is located on the inside frame rail on the drivers side just behind the door.
