Paneling and Trim - Wood paneling goof up

We bought our first single family home not that long ago. One of the rooms has wood paneling in it. There were holes leading to the ceiling and walls that needed to be patched up due to rodent intrusion and drafts.

We went really crazy on the room with mud and putty to seal the room up (that was the priority) and then painted it over without sanding it.

The room is a mess and we did what we had to do.

Any thoughts on how to "unmud" the room and then paint it again (possibly with some texture paint to make it look reasonable).

The only good thing we have going for us is that the room is about 100 square feet.

Did you remove the paneling and patch the underlying wall? or did you put joint compound on the paneling?:eek:

Painted j/c doesn't sand very well. You probably need to scrape the worst of it and then skim coat to even it out.

A skim coat is a thin 'veneer' of joint compound applied over drywall. It doesn't always adhere well to wood - that's why it isn't recomended for use over paneling.

Ideally, you would tear out the paneling and fix/replace the drywall/plaster under it. Otherwise, scrape the worst of it and smooth it out with j/c then, sand,prime and paint
