I have a GE LG21 gas furnace (c.1961). The blower will not shut off even though the thermostat is switched off. The pilot light is the only thing on, yet the only way to turn off the blower is to shut off the breaker. I replaced the blower unit a couple of years ago and it has run beautifully since. Any ideas about what could cause this?

There is typically a fan switch or combination fan and limit switch above the burners that turns the fan off and on. Sometimes that switch will stick in the on position.

A Honeywell fan'limit switch with a metal plate cover that pops off, exposing a round dial with pemeratures on it is common.

Other designs may be there too.

So, hunt for the fan switch. If you use your hand next to it to bang on the vabinet often it will switch off. But it's happen again, it should probably be replaced.

Also, sometimes there is a "summer fan" type switch thatwill cause the fan to run constantly. That could be on the furnace or thermostat. Check that such a switch isn't turned to the fan position ---on thermostats it should usually be set to "auto."
