I was trying to install a new keyed entry knob(from garage to house) and noticed when I tried to install it in the door it did not center itself to the hole on the door. Its like it was too short. Do they sell different lengths? It is off by at least 1/2". Too much wood to chip away at. I called one locksmith to ask about rekey and quoted me $45. Does this sound right? Please help.

Does it have the adjustable length backset? Most do nowadays, either by twisting, or lifting a clip and pulling/pushing on the latch/bolt. At least these fit most common backsets. Whats the measurement from the edge of the door to the center of the hole for the handleset?

To add the adjustable backsets are normally 2 3/8 in to 2 3/4 in and that sounds like the difference in length you have run into.If you still have the lock's packge or instructions it will tell you if that lock has an adj backset and how to adjust it.Also if you bought it from somewhere other than a big box store there may be people to tell you how to adjust it or you could go back and look at the package of another lock.

As for the rekey I'm assuming he's coming to you not you taking the locks to him and it's several locks. If so then 45 is a good price since he's taking into account travel, time etc.unless those costs are a seperate charge from the 45.If 45 covers rekeying only and nothing else take them off and go to a local hardware store or locksmith where it'll probably be around 5 dollars per lock to rekey (assuming these are well known common brands etc)

$45 for onsite service is an excellent price.

Beware of hardware stores due to inexperienced and unqualified people attempting to do what locksmiths make look simple.

I cannot tell you the number of times I am called to repair locks that people have taken to the hardware store to attempt to save a buck or two.

Locksmiths love repairing the hardware store screw ups, believe it or not, they more often keep locksmiths in business and often cost more to fix, putting more money in the locksmiths pocket.

Why call a plumber or electrician when you can take it to the hardware store so they can screw it enough for you to call a pro?
