I just recently purchased an old mahogany dining room set. It is in need of refinishing and I would like to refinish it myself. Is the refinishing process for mahogany the same as the refinishing of other hard woods? I am unsure how to begin working on this furniture.
Thank you for your help.

There are two factors you need to be aware of: The table top and the splades of the chairs (the piece in the middle of the back) are most like veneered. This goes along with the second piece of info - veneer is thin as a matter of course, and although mahogany is botanically a hardwood, it is relatively soft. Be careful sanding so you don't cut through the veneer.

Also, mahogany is an open grain wood. If you're after a dead smooth finish (regrdless of sheen)you'd be well advised to use a wood filler before finishing. This will fill up the pores (grain) of the wood so you don't need fourteen coats of finish to get it smooth.
