I have a Craftsman snowblower mdl 536.887990 9hp dual stage. The problem is that the auger fails to turn. The impeller works fine. The shear pins are good. Is the problem in the gear box?

If when the impeller turns there is no movement at all in the augers it may the key on the auger shaft under the worm gear. If augers are "jumpy" when impeller turns most likely worm gear is stripped

Thanks, how big a job is it to replay the woodruff key?

On a scale of 1-10 , 6.5- the auger comes off, the impeller and auger blades get unbolted, shear pins come out, blades come off, split the gear in half (remove bolts) and inspect.

The good news if you can handle the labor is the key is less than $2 and if you get in there and it is the gear only $35, most are in the $70-$90 range.

I checked the prices on the parts and you're right. What about a new gasket and lube? Should that be a given when ordering parts?

For sure, the gasket maker I use is loctite anaerobic 518, grease is machine specific, ask the dealer.

The spring pins that hold the impeller onto the auger shaft are recessed into the auger housing. There isn't any room to punch out the pins and after a couple of days of trying a small amount of C-4 is looking like not so bad an idea. Any suggestions
