What can be done if the colouring is affected?

After emailing Heather for a little clarification, I learned she had spilled a few drops of acetone on the strecher of a chair, removing not only part of the finish, but part of the color as well.

May advice to her was to use artist oil colors to retore the color. Any mistakes made at this stage could be removed with a rag wet with paint thinner. The finish (which was actually lacquer) could be filled in with brush on lacquer applied with an art brush and then sanded out smooth with 600 grit wet/dry paper. The sheen could be restored wth 0000 steel wool.

Other readers may want to note that some manufacturers use a semitransparent lacquer (with color added) in the final stages of finishing their furniture. This is done to 'even out' any color differences and provide for a more uniform product line. It is a tribulation to the scratch and dent repairman because the color is IN the finish, instead of UNDER it.
