we just purchased redwood patio furniture and it is already splintering...what is the best way to protect redwood furniture from sun and weathering?

Both Dupont and Thompson make excellent products for waterproofing (sealing) wood for exterior use, however none of these will keep the wood from fading in direct sunlight. An exterior opaque redwood stain would probably be your best solution. Check with your local building supply or home center and go with a national brand.
