hello..i have just sanded down a spindled chair that was polyurethane.. how important is it to get all of the polyurethane off before i prime it and give it a color paint.. right now it is stained and polyurethaned.. im having trouble sanding down at the tops and at the bottoms of the spindles.. its still shiny and a bit sticky there.. thanks for ur suggestion. thanks laurabal25

Laura:

Polyurethane is a snob - it doesn't like to associate with any other finish (almost). The best approach is to get rid of ALL the poly.

A sharp knife held at right angles to the spindle and used to scrape away the poly would be my approach at this point. You can sand out any inadvertent knicks you may inflict.

Another possibility is to cut the sandpaper sheet (8 1/2 x 11) into 11 inch by 1 inch strips. Hold one end in each hand with the paper looped around the spindle - saw it back and forth to sand away what your fingers won't let you get to.

Whatever the method (and suggestions from other readers are more than welcom) get rid of the poly before you prime.
