How can I repair a broken chair back main spindal?? Glue first and then dowel or what?

I emailed the sender of this question to get more specifics - here's his reply and my suggestion.

Sorry George; I should have been more specific. The main (Larger) left hand
spindle has broken approximately 2" above the seat. The break is jagged. I thought that if I glued and clamped the spindle until dry and then drilled up through the base of the spindle that is still in the seat , and on
into the upper part of the spindle ,then place a glued dowel in it. Would this be a strong enough repair? Thanks for your time.

Peter:

I use the smae method to make similar repairs in my shop - up to a point. I keep a supply of 1/4" steel rod on hand, and use that instead of a wood dowel. I secure the rod with an epoxy such as Devcon 2-ton. Makes for drilling a smaller hole, and gives a lot more strength.

If the broken pieces mate well when glued and are securely clamped while drying, this is probably overkill - but it only costs a little more to go first class.
