Outdoor Power Equipment and Small Engines - Ariens 724 snowblower - need gear case

I recently brought in my Ariens 724 (932035) into the shop. What they found was that the whole gearcase needs replacing. The shaft was bent a 1/2 inch. They have never seen this before. On Friday 1/9 on caught our dog lease in the snowblower very slightly. I was able to pull itout with very little problem. How could this have bend the shaft and ruined the gear case? The dealer wants $306 for the part and over $600 to fix. I paid $600 for it used from the same dealer 3 years ago. Any ideas where I can find a used gear case?

I just called my local shop , $360 CAD. Is the gearcase cracked? If it's just the shaft bent why not just replace the shaft? The whole gearcase is huge money compared to individual parts.
