I bought a house two years ago. It has Kenmore water softener in it. I don't have the model number with me right now, but I can provide it this evening if necessary. It seems to regenerate about once a week or slightly less often than that. I can't say it has problems or anything, I just have some simple questions.
1) I can't find water test reports from before installation. Is there an easy way to test that the softener is not only working, but providing the proper level of softening? I think it is currently set on a hardness level of 3 but I have no idea if that is still the proper setting because I'm guessing softeners performance degrades over time and water supply conditions change over time.
2) besides adding salt and running some iron remover through the resins everyone few months, what are some typical maintenance items I could tend to myself?
