When the gas burner is lit there is a poppin sound that started in the last few weeks - the unit is abt 4years old - inside the house it is more like a banging sound. Nothing has changed includin the temp setting - but I did try turning it down some - no difference.

But I would think it would be running the burner all the time.. gas bill doubled since last month, but with winter (and having a gas heater for the house), I would not think that is abnormal.
Local homedepot says there are replacement kits for the elements and thermostat - I guess thats the first thing to try.

You probably have sediment/mineral built up in the bottom of the tank. Do you have hard water? Is the temp of the water still good? Check it with a simple cooking thermometer at the closest tap, after it has gotten to full temp. If the temp is good, its not the thermostat.
Just do a search for flushing a water heater for instructions and cautions.

Tank flushed about 15-20 months ago.
Looking at the date, its probably more like 6 years old. But the previous one lasted about 15.
My mom recently said that twice she had run out of HotWat during a shower.
Guess I will start with another flush.

Flushed out clean. But popin is back as soon as it started warming up. :/

Well, thats about it for my ideas. Thats been the problem with the couple I had to mess with. Wonder if it has gotten such a hard layer that it won't flush out?
Lets see what a Pro has to say, maybe they'll be around today.
