I recently reupholstered a 20 year old couch. The back cushions (each 5" deep x 20" high x 36" wide) are sagging & the inserts need replacing. Currently, they are stuffed with filling.
Would seat foam in a lower density (1.8lb/ft) wrapped in Dacron be the best thing to fill the BACK cushions with? What is the best back cushion filling that will withstand heavy use & hold its shape? You're advice on how to construct a new cushion insert is greatly appreciated.

You can make your own cushion inserts, by sewing up muslin bags slightly larger than your cushions and filling them with dacron. I had some made for me by a company called foam n' more (they're on ebay). they make a baffled insert (the insert has sections in it, so the fiber doesn't move around). they are really beautiful and make the newly upholstered sofa look awesome. you can check out foam n' more and see how they make theirs. then decide to make your own, or order from them.
