Just bought a new house. There are two control panels and a panel with all the wiring. The previous owners had not used the system and we have no info on it. We'd like to use it for at least "border" security, not sure if we want to have it monitored yet. My question is what is the best way to get the code for it and get it up and running?

Vista 50p, that's actually a pretty heavy duty system (commercial grade).

Try this site: Honeywell (Ademco) Manuals (http://www.aesecurity.com/manuals.html)

to get the manuals you will need. Give them a _good_ read through, especially the sections on programming and system operation. This is a heavy duty and complex system.

Like all ademco design alarms, you should be able to power the system down then power up and press * + # on any keypad within 30 seconds to get into programming. Then press #00 to get the installer code read back 1 digit at a time. Once you have that, press *99 to exit programming.

You should be able to use the installer code to set a new master user code. Do not use the installer code to arm and disarm, it will get you into trouble, trust me.
