I've stripped this old (mahagony) piece of it's black, alligatored finish. Now it's RED. I'm hoping you can help me sucessfully refinish so the piece has a deeper, brown tone. Stains don't seem to work-they still come out red. Perhaps green oil paint added to some denatured alcohol or ??????? Thanks so much!

You're on the right track thinking of green as an additive - but NOT the paint. Green plus red makes brown - the depth of the brown depending on the intensity of the red. For someone outside of a shop environment, here's a method you can use.

Many of the home centers paint stores and hardwares sell an aerosole "kit". It comes with a pressurized container, a siphon tube, and an empty container. When assembled, it allows you to spray whatever thin liquid you put in the perviously empty container.

Mix artists oil color (Thalo Green) with Naptha and add it to the container. This will allow you to spray a green "toner" uniformly over the red. Go in layers to get the color you want. Don't try to go from the color you have to the one you want in one step. Once you've gotten it where you want it let dry thoroughly, then seal and finish.

Be aware you won't be able to knock all the red out, but you should be able to mute it to your satisfaction.

Another possibility is bleaching the piece, but in my experience you're still going to be dealing with some shade of red after bleaching, so why add an unneccesary step?
