I'm looking to cut out an access door into a free standing piece of drywall that buts against a glass window. I'm having trouble coming up with best options for 1) supporting the door and hinges and 2) the best way to trim the door out so it looks presentable.

I'd probably make a face frame out of 1x2's (like a cabinet has) and screw it together on the back side with pocket screws. Screw some backing to the back side of the drywall in your opening. Then nail the face frame onto the wall to cover up the edges of the hole you cut.

Then make a cabinet door that overlaps the face frame by about 1" on each side (a piece of 1/2 or 3/4" MDF if you will be painting it) and mount some hinges to it... screwing the hinges onto the face frame.
