In the Painting forum there was an item about not using Polyurethane over a sanding sealer. I am concerned about this as I was planning to use a filler over my oak cabinet before applying the Poly.

Is sanding sealer the same as what I would use to fill the pores in Oak? Does this mean I can't use polyurethane? how else can I achieve a smooth finish over porous oak?

pjaffe:

Sanding sealer and the paste filler you would apply to fill the grain of a wood to obtain a smooth surface are two entirely different products.

You should be able to use a paste filler under polyurethane with no problems, just follow the manufacturers directions for application.

It would be preferable if the paste filler was from the same manufacturer. It should state it is compatible with polyurethane.
