How do i clean years of wax and dirt build up off of a hard wood floor without having to sand and refinish it? I need a solution to break down the dirt. The floor is in good shape underneath.

I think you will find some help here... George has experience in this type of thing.

Years ago, floor refinishers used a product called varsol to clean floors prior to sanding. Unfortunately, that product is hard to find today.
If you're dealing only with wax, dirt, and accumulated grime, ordinary paint thinner (mineral spirits) and a scrub brush (with plenty of elbow grease and rags) will do the
job.
Be sure to provide adequate ventilation and dispose of the cleanup rags carefully.
