I want to purchase an LCD to mount on top of my fireplace. However, the depth of the mantle is 9 inches. The LCD I want to purchase is the LG 42LG30 TV which has a depth of 11.6" with the stand so it would hang over by 2.6". I really do not want to mount it to the wall above the fireplace simply because I am not a fan of that installation.
Besides mounting it on the wall, what other options do I have?
Can I cut 2 inches off the front or back of the TV stand to make it fit?
Is there a universal stand that I can use instead?
Can I screw down into the stand so I would be mounting it to the mantle instead of the wall?

Depending on the mantle, you could possible 'add a layer' of shelf that extends out 3". Such as a 1 x 12 board screwed in place, for example. Done properly, it would blend into the existing mantle and not be noticable.

That's not a bad idea! Should the layer be the width of the TV or the entire mantle width.

It's going to be a matter of personal choice. I like the idea of full width myself. Try a piece full and a piece 1' wider than the stand to get an idea.

If he fireplace can be used (by you or a future occupant) make sure that the mantle + extension is code compliant and

Also, be sure your mantel can support the weight. Flat panels are pretty heavy.
