We are re-doing the walls in our new house. They are wood paneling... way too dark and ugly!

In the den, we are going to paint over the paneling (got it rough-sanded and spackled the grooves, right now it's drying and waiting to be sanded again, and primed). We also want to do wallpaper up about halfway... partly because DH got some wallpaper on final clearance at Lowe's and wants to use it.

The room has a divider wall in it. I'm trying to figure out what to do with it... we decided that we are going to leave it in place. I want to remove the trim from around the ledge there in the middle, wallpaper the whole thing, then do the wallpaper around the rest of the room at the same height, and add a "chair rail" type thing along the top of that, in a nice oak color (and use it also to replace the trim moved from below the ledge-thing on the divider wall).

Does anyone know if that should look okay? Is there anything I can do about the dark color of the spindles on the divider wall? Do I just leave it, or should I try sanding/priming/painting it a lighter color (to match the walls, perhaps, which will be the same as the lighter stripes on the wallpaper?)

Here is the wall I'm talking about:

And the wallpaper we plan on using (I think the stripes are about 1" wide):

Hi Amy D.,

I am not sure if I understand the whole situation....
Do you intend to set wallpaper on the panels?

Yes, I'm going to prime the paneling (with Kilz) and then paint and wallpaper over that.

Hi Amy D.

Some suggestions
- Start from the top--> if you decide to wallpaper the top part of the wall, instead of painting this area, use a "bridge wallpaper". This is a base white thick wallpaper that will cover all the imperfections of the paneling (grooves, nails, primer, etc)--> the final wallpaper goes over the "bridge"
- Paint--> I'd use a color following the dark colors of the wallpaper, in a light hue. Check the following colors by Sherwin Williams--> 6046 Swing Brown / 6341 Red Cent
- Molding --> you can use the same color for the molding + the spindles. Check the following colors by Sherwin Williams--> 6579 Gala Pink / 6863 Lusty Red
