All of a sudden our electric water heater has stopped producing hot water, or if any it produces very little. Checked the breaker, it wasn't tripped. Nothing else unusual going on within the household water supply. Suspect perhaps a faulty thermostat? There are two of them on the tank, one upper and one lower. Replaced them both about six months ago. How do I test these to see if one or both has gone bad? I have an electrical tester available. Any other suggestions/advice to approach troubleshooting appreciated.

Check for voltage where the leads connect to the element. If you have full voltage the element is probably burnt out.

check the wires on your thermostats that lead from the thermostats for current. If you have current, your elements ( probably just one if you have some hot water) are bad. Be sure the wires that feed the thermostats are hot.

I checked for voltage where the leads connect to both elements. One element showed 244 volts, the other showed 006.

check the wires on your thermostats that lead from the thermostats for current. If you have current, your elements ( probably just one if you have some hot water) are bad. Be sure the wires that feed the thermostats are hot.
On the upper thermostat there is one short wire that goes from one of its terminals to the upper element. Another wire on the upper thermostat goes from the other terminal of that thermostat to somewhere I can't see.
On the lower thermostat there is one short wire that goes from one its terminals to the lower element. Another wire on the lower thermostat goes from the other terminal on that themostat to somewhere I can't see.
What is the exact procedure I should follow with my tester to check the wires that lead from the thermostats for current? And what is the procedure to check whether the wires that feed the thermostats are hot?

I tested each element for continuity by removing the two wires from the terminals on each element, then, with my digital electrical meter/tester set on ohms and the readout showing OL, touched the probes to each two screws on both of the elements terminals. I got a reading when testing the top element, but no reading (other than OL) showing when testing the bottom element.
Is this the correct procedure to check for continuity of the element(s)? If so, does my result indicate the bottom element is bad?
Obviously I'm relatively clueless about how to properly troubleshoot this problem. It seems that the upper portion of the heater heats up but not the lower, and we get a short amount of hot water, a few minutes maybe. I do have a pretty good multi-function electrical tester, but need guidance from those with more expertise please.

Replaced bottom element and problem solved. Old element had corrosion bridge about a half inch past the plug, preventing heat transfer. Thanks for help.
