I needed to cut about a 1/4" off bottom end of a 6 panel wood door so that the door would close properly, but instead I carelessly cut the top of the door :o. I'd like to reposition the hinges a 1/4" down so I don't have to buy a new door. But, I think the new holes will be too close to the old holes. What's the best way to handle the old holes so that I can create new holes very close by?

Fill the holes with glue and golf tees. Let dry thoroughly. Then re-mortise the door to move the hinges.

The crossbore and latch bore will not aline with the strike after repositioning the hinges. Everything must be altered.

OK, so any thoughts about whether it is better to raise the jamb-side hinge or the door-side?

Why not just add quarter round above the door to cover that gap?
Add it to the door frame top over the doorstop.

If the door framing is removable, you can rebuild the jamb set to where everything is lifted . I would opt for that, again, if it is removable. Only requires a couple of cuts and nail it back together. Looks better on the hinge side and you don't have to adjust the striker, either.
