I have a 1950's home built in San Diego that needs new floors. Right now there is carpet. Under the carpet is the original 3/8" x 1.5" flooring 9can't be refinished. That is nailed directly into 3/4" x 7.5" planks which are over the floor beams. Now for my question: What should I do with the old flooring? Should I take it out? Should I leave it in and install the new floor into it? Thanks for your help.

those planks you are talking about they run diagonally right? those are called slats.....alot of houses built then were built like that, you really need to remove old flooring and sheet floor with 3/4 inch tech plywood that will give you good solid floor with no squeaks I know its alot more work and money but it will be very solid and well worth effort.
Thanks,
Lee

Read manufacter's instructions for subfloor prep and all other instructions for the product that you want to install. You must follow these to the "T" in order not to void warranties. I think you will find that you can do what you want based on the description that you provide.
