I have a Maytag dryer from the 70's. It was rebuilt a couple of years back. The dryer has worked like a charm every time but then my daughter put her shoes into dry and the dryer will not run any more. When your press the start button the dryer does absolute nothing, no noise its dead in the water. What can I check to see if I can find the problem myself?

most likely the door switch or thermal cut-off.

About how old, and is it gas or 220 electric?

OP stated it was electric, built in the 70's. I agree with the door switch. More modern dryers have the shoe rack that you install in the dryer so the shoes don't bang around and damage stuff. Have you checked your circuit breaker to see if it is tripped?

I checked the circuit breaker its good and I also checked the belt which is also good. The model is a DE308.

Question is this direct wired, or is there a plug/cord set up.
In either case remove the rear access panel and confirm that you have 220V. between the two power connections (BLACK) and (RED).
