I have 4 cables sticking out in the place of my old thermostat: two white ones and two black ones (I assume one set is for ground and one is hot). Should I but a single or a double pole thermostat?

single pole or double pole theromstat? When you mention single or double pole you should be talking about a contactor. Doesn't really matter what kind of thermostat you get. Alot of the new ones can be programed for whatever unit you are using.

I should be able to handle wiring myself. I just need to know if I should get a single pole or a double pole one.

Is this for a baseboard heater? If so, single or double, more of a personal preference.

I may be wrong, but if its a 220 heater, a 2 pole would cut power on both legs. That would be my preference.

If its somehow a 120 line, then a single pole would be just as good and prob cheaper.

As I said, could be wrong.

Yes - it's for a 240V baseboard heater (actually it's an in-wall heater that blows hot air). Thanks for your help!
