I have a 20+ year old furnace which is in fine working order, but I noticed a lot of heat loss from the metal housing above the furnace. (where the supply ducts branch from). Should this be insulated somehow to minimize heat loss? If so, how and with what type of insulation material?

Should be insulated on the inside unless it has failed due to the age.
