I have a sliding glass door where the lock is broken in the locked position. I can not open the door. The lock handle turns back and forth freely. There is nothing obstructing the the track of the door. I want to remove and replace the handle but am having problems. Where the only screws are to get the handle off are recessed behind the frame of the door. I can see them but can not get to them with even one of those Z shaped screw drivers. I can get the screw driver in there but the screw is recess so that I can only get it on there at a sharp angle and there is no way that the screw driver will engage the screw. I talked to a guy at home depot and he said that the piece in the frame that the lock engages should only be plastic and that if I am going to replace it I might as well pry the door open and break that piece. That piece is not plastic and will not break. As I have been trying to pry the door open I am starting to damage the door and the frame.

Check the site below. They have many pictures of locks and handles which enlarge when you scroll over them. You may find your problem and see a solution. One thought, are there any "dimples" on the flat surface of the handle? If so, they may be pop out plugs concealing the screws.

Just get a hack saw and then get a replacement handle for like $20.
