I have purchased a couple of high back wood chairs that have a dark stain on them. They are going to be used for thrones in a play. I would like to paint them gold. What kind of paint should I use? The hardware store has gold spray paint, but also has this special type of paint for marbelizing effects and metal effects. I have no clue as to what to do or how to begin.

I've painted a great deal of stage scenery and one thing to remember is that it will be seen from a distance by the audience, not scrutinized up close. I would use the gold spray paint.
